Using Technology to Enhance your Basketball Program

“A basketball coach’s guide to being more efficient”

Technology has rapidly become a big part of our society and as a result has changed the way we communicate and interact with each other.  Our kids live in a technology driven world that is constantly changing.  New devices and communication resources are continually being developed and as basketball coaches we have to be willing to adjust to the times and use it to help our programs

Effective basketball coaches are the ones that are willing and able to adapt to their players and their surroundings.  That includes adjusting what you may do on and off the court.  Most of your players will own a computer and or a cell phone so emailing and texting is something that you can use to communicate with your players.

It may be sending a text or email to your players and parents about reminders of practice times or about game day information.  It could also be used to give individual players encouraging comments such as “Good practice today. Keep it up.” or “Good luck on your math test today.”

A small comment can go a long way in helping your relationship with the players and team chemistry between players.  Also, you can use email and text to send game results to media outlets such as the local paper or other sources that may be willing to post information about your program.  Texting can be an easier, more effective, and quicker way for you to communicate with your players and parents.

Another way to use the Internet is to create your own team web page.  Most school websites will have a section about athletics where they post schedules, pictures, and results throughout the year, but you should also have a webpage of your own that is solely devoted to your basketball program.  It should include your team philosophy and rules, practice times, schedule, game pictures, individual player pictures, and other information that players, parents, and fans are able to access.  It will be helpful to visit other team web pages to help you set up and organize your team page in order for it to better enhance the visibility of your program.

Another continually changing technology tool is social networking.  Nowadays websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Skype, and MySpace are popular for a lot of teenagers and adults to use in order to send a message to a mass number of people at the same time.  In the following years it may change and it is your job to keep up with the latest communication trends and use them to your advantage.

They can be used to announce fundraisers you may have or to ask for sponsorships from local and area businesses.  It can be very helpful for coaches that are starting new programs and need to get the word out.  It can be also be used to announce information about team camps or individual camps that you may be having and to find camps that you may want your team or individual players to attend.

You can also use the Internet to find drills that you could implement in your practices or plays you may want to use with your team.  There are a lot of free sites available that can provide you with valuable information about coaching, teaching individual skills, and building a program.  They offer free videos and easy ways to purchase other videos from top college and pro level coaches.

Other websites and blogs allow you to post questions you may have and receive comments from other coaches around the world.  It is also very useful in helping young coaches develop their philosophy as well as assisting experienced coaches in adjusting their philosophy.

In the age of technology where mass information is available coaches have all the resources and knowledge needed to better enhance their coaching and visibility of their program. It is our job to learn and be willing to use the technology to help our players become better and help them reach their potential.

The First NBA Hispanic Owner

The NBA has just increased its Hispanic Ownership by 1. Congrats to Alex Meruelo as the new owner of the Atlanta Hawks. This is his direct quote on ownership:

I wasn’t quite fast enough, tall enough or quick enough, so those dreams didn’t quite get me that far,” he said. “But those dreams brought me the burning desire to be involved in the NBA. It’s something I’ve always wanted my entire life to somehow be a part of the NBA.

Meruelo said “it’s a privilege and I’m honored” to be the league’s first Hispanic majority owner

At least we have one feel good story during this lockout. Lets hope that Alex will be able to spend some money to enable the Hawks to remain competitive.

The 500,000 Dollar D-League Play

Bruce Pearl was offered 500,000 dollars to be the next coach of the Texas Legends. Give it to Mark Cuban. Only he would spend that kind of money on his minor league affiliate. Granted, Donnie Nelson (President of Basketball Operations for the Mavs) is a co-owner and mouthpiece of the Legends. He may be doin the talking but this is a Cubanist play. Cuban has officially turned into my generation’s George Steinbrenner. He might as well keep his investment relevant. IT ain’t like basketball is going on.

This play is genious. Hire a disgraced ex-NCAA Coach who is awaiting punishment from the NBA. His options are limited: A) Sign with the Legends B) work in TV for ESPN or the like. By increasing the salary to 500k Nelson takes TV out of the mix. Bruce Pearl would be mentally deficient if he didn’t take this gig. Congrats to Bruce for being in the right place at the right time after getting canned from Tennessee.

—-editor’s note: Since we have no NBA basketball I’m going to reinvent LB until then. I’m going to go more TMZ style while just reporting the major news. Might as well turn LB into a soap opera till then…

Let’s Hope the NBA Learns from the NFL – Calling All Guest Writers!

The NFL finally came to a labor agreement. Through all of the blow hards they were able to agree before the start of the season. No football was missed. I have grave concerns as to the intelligence of David Stern. Stern is a hard ass. He is also very pompous. Recently, I read that this NBA labor stoppage could last 2 years!!! Can you imagine two years without NBA basketball?! I hope that the players and the owners realize how that would irreparably damage the sport. Just look how long it took the NHL to recover? Heck, some people will tell you the NHL never recovered. Work stoppages really turn fans off to the sport. The NBA now has international fans (like our favorite North Korean dictator – Kim Jong-il)! I hope the NBA doesn’t let this drag on and enable teams like Besiktas to become household names!

Since the NBA is on strike Lebasketbawl is looking for writers. If anyone would like to do a guest article feel free to contact us. Email kobeofthena@gmail.com and we can work something out. Any topic of basketball is allowed— even the dreaded WNBA. I am having a difficult time thinking of content without the NBA functioning day to day….

LB is Back To Cover the NBAers Running to Europe

I took a nice needed month off from the world of the NBA. I’m back to cover the pathetic NBA lockout. Perhaps, the most hilarious thang to date is the fact that Deron Williams has inked a deal with Besiktas to play in Turkey. Allen Iverson was a trend setter and didn’t even know it. He isn’t the only one to converge on the other continent. One of our local heros, Ryan Thompson, is heading over to Italy to take place in the increased competition. Ryan is the younger brother of Jason Thompson the PF of the Sac Kings. Ryan played in the D-League last year and hoped to land on a NBA roster. However, with no NBA, and multiple players signing in the European Leagues he figures why not take a shot to improve his game.  It ain’t like the D-League is getting any better without the NBA to feed!

The bottom line is that the typical NBA player hasn’t stashed a large amount of cash. So they are going to be hungry to cash in on any opportunity. Granted, Kobe’s interest in Europe is shocking. But to team up on Besiktas with Williams making a cool 1 million a month—- seems obvious enough to me! Besiktas is turning themselves into a household name.  When push comes to shove I personally believe Kobe is truly posturing and trying to call David Stern’s bluff. Granted, I believe the rest of the mid level NBA players are not. Deron Williams may be the biggest free agent signing overseas but he will not be alone. Don’t forget much of that money comes tax free….

Today was just a taste. Tomorrow is the full buffet!

The Jackasses We Call Timberwolves

Yahoo Sports is reporting that Kurt Rambis is about to get canned. I love that franchise up in Minnesota. There are D-League franchises that are run better. It is true that Kurt Rambis has gone 32-132. I’m not saying that Rambis is the next coming of Phil Jackson. However, you need more then Kevin Love to be a competitive NBA franchise.

Kevin McHale was chased out of town and amazingly enough he has found his way with TV analyst gigs. He parlayed his pontification into a head coaching position in Houston.

Earth to Minnesota. Get a clue.

Cory Booker is My Basketball Idol

Cory Booker is one heck of an outspoken Mayor. He is mostly known for his crime fighting and education reforming ways in the gritty town of Newark, NJ. I’m a West Coast Baller who is trapped on the East Coast. More specifically in the armpit of America – New Jersey. According to NESN Cory Booker is trying to recruit a new NBA franchise to Newark. Here is the direct quote:

The Sacramento Kings have been trying to move to Anaheim, Calif., and only recently promised to stay put through next season, and the New Orleans Hornets are consistent subjects of relocation rumors. The article also lists the Memphis Grizzlies, Atlanta Hawks, Minnesota Timberwolves and Charlott Bobcats as candidates for a move

Cory Booker speaks the truth. I have been to the Prudential Center, It is a damn nice arena. Personally, I’m a fan of the Cigar Bar. You can buy a nice stogey and step out onto the terrace and truly enjoy the moment. Having just one professional sports team in that arena is an underutilization.

He does speak the truth. The NY media can easily handle threeNBA franchises. NY sports fans are as die-hard as they come. Though I personally give the nod to Philly as the sickest fans in America. Lets not forget Magic’s boy Peter Vecsey writes daily for the NY Post. He is an old timer and I’m sure he would concur. A third team would give him more to write about.

Personally, I like the idea because it would continue to give me an option to watch NBA basketball without having to truck into the Garden and cross the river. Getting in and out of Newark is cake and the arena is worth the treck. Cory Booker keep beating the drum it can’t be that hard to grab MJ’s Charlotte Franchise. I’m sure MJ would like to be relevant again and what better place then the NY market?

With James Dolan f’in up the Knicks and firing Donnie Walsh I for one would like to have another franchise to root for…I’m sure NY Vinnie would have agreed!

Magic Is One Whiny Lil’ Bitch

Other then the impending lockout and NBA draft their ain’t too much going on. Granted, we have radio personalities in Cleveland naming their kids after Dirk Diggler but I digress. Onto the bitch we call Earvin “Magic” Johnson.

Magic is feuding with old school NBA writer Peter Vecsey. I myself am a touch “throwback” as I subscribe to daily delivery of the NY Post. I like to hold the fine print in my hands. I particularly like reading the smut filled Post. I read Peter Vecsey daily and though he does get a lil’ wild from time to time he is a good writer. He makes valid points and his Magic Johnson observation is spot f’in on. Here is Vecsey’s direct quote courtesy of balljunkie:

A former player finds it unreal for Magic Johnson to go an entire Finals as an ABC analyst without offering the slightest insight whatsoever. “I assume he remembers something about the game”

Magic Johnson SUCKS as a analyst for the NBA. Maybe he should take lessons from my ball licking idol Charles Barkley! So Magic stop acting like a lil’ bitch and learn to accept critism. Embrace it, you know what they say… bad news is better then no news at all.
