The San Antonio Spurs realize all too well that with an aging core their window of opportunity is not going to be open for all that much longer. According to the “San Antonio Express-News” that is causing the team to pull out all the stops on the payroll front. The team right now is over the NBA Salary Cap as head coach Gregg Popovich and General Manager R.C. Buford have convinced team owner to become one of the teams in the league that will pay a Luxury Tax in the upcoming season.”
San Antonio earlier this summer to acquire forward Richard Jefferson from the Milwaukee Bucks. They also signed veteran Free Agents Antonio McDyess and Theo Ratliff and picked up a nice young player in the NBA Draft in DeJuan Blair. Combined these moves now have the Spurs $10 million over the NBA cap.
Poppovich said that this was a needed measure if the team wanted to have a legitimate shot to win an NBA Title. The head coach told reporters “The face of the league has changed significantly over the last two years. We hung in there as long as we could. Now, we’re going to have to spend money like some other people.
