How badly do the Boston Celtics want to win another NBA Title next June? Badly enough that they spent a whole lot of money to get rid of the team’s final distraction. “The Boston Globe” is reporting that the Celtics have reached an agreement with Free Agent to be Rajon Rondo that will keep him in the Celtics green for five more years after this one. Boston reportedly had to swallow hard on this one as the deal is said to be worth $55 million over the five year pact.

The Celtics had offered Rondo a reported 5 year deal said to be worth $45 million over the length of the deal. It has been reported that the point guard and his agent Bill Duffy were looking for a deal worth $55-60 million for a five year hitch.

Boston was not sure if Rondo could command that kind of money as a restricted Free Agent next summer. They would have had the right to match any offer sheet another team had signed him to and if they had waited they may have saved some big bucks in the process. But that is what separates the “elite teams” from the others; they are willing to go above and beyond in order to attain their only real goal. That is attaining that Larry O’Brien Trophy at the end of the playoffs.

Rondo had told reporters that if an extension was not reached he would put it out of his mind and just worry about what was going on on the hardwood. That is a very noble statement; and most likely he was being sincere when he said it. However something like that is far easier said than done.

According to reports the contract would make Rondo the third highest point guard in the NBA trailing only Deron Williams and Chris Paul. Is Rajon Rondo the third best point guard in the league? That question is open to debate; however one thing is for sure. Rajon has far exceeded expectations and is a critical part of a Celtics squad poised to make a run for another NBA title.
