Celtics Pierce On The Shelf For Two Weeks Following Knee Surgery

The “Boston Globe” reported Wednesday that Boston Celtics All-Star forward Paul Pierce is expected to miss the next two weeks after having surgery performed on his right knee Wednesday. Pierce scored 21 points Tuesday night as the Celtics defeated the Indiana Pacers 103-94. The procedure was classified as minor as the veteran’s knee was drained after doctors found an infection in an examination on Wednesday.
Boston’s Director of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge said this forward was not in any pain during Tuesday night’s game against the Pacers. Ainge said “Paul felt fine after the game. He felt great. A few hours later there was swelling and pain, and so they put him through some tests this morning. Then, they went in and they felt like they needed to clean out the infection. It’s nothing structural, and it’s a guess, but they are saying two weeks. I’m always when worried when a player gets hurt but the good news is there was no structural (damage to the knee.)
Boston has a Christmas Day match-up against the Orlando Pacers and Ainge told reporters he is not sure whether the club will be without both Pierce and Kevin Garnett who missed the game on Tuesday with a bruised right thigh. The Celtics executive said “I don’t know when for KG. He may play, but it will be a game-time decision Friday. I think he’s fine; it’s not anything structural. He wanted to play (Tuesday) night but we’re being cautious.”
The Celtics head into their Christmas Day match-up with a record of 22-5 while Orlando is 22-7. Pierce has averaged 18.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game this season.
